In 2004, Malaysia-China Hydro Joint Venture (MCH JV) consortium signed a shareholders’ agreement to build the Bakun Dam. China Synohydro Corporation would be responsible for building Bakun Dam. The total cost of the Bakun Dam was paid by Malaysian government. In response to accusations of unsafe construction methods, China Sinhydro Corporation admitted that its processes were not in accordance with correct procedures. This could be because Chinese contractors were under extreme pressure from the Malaysian government to finish the dam as quickly as possible after a series of delays and cost overruns. The dam came into operation on August 6 2011.
